{"id":1287,"date":"2022-11-01T20:28:55","date_gmt":"2022-11-01T20:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/?p=1287"},"modified":"2023-02-05T23:15:54","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T23:15:54","slug":"jess-hylton-new-artist-in-residence-teaching-associate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/jess-hylton-new-artist-in-residence-teaching-associate\/","title":{"rendered":"Jess Hylton, NEW artist in residence\/teaching associate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Q: What is your area of specialty?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> I am mostly a poet who pushes her work toward the intersection of writing and visual art.&nbsp; However, I work a lot with feminist and LGBTQIA+ themes and gothic monsters in text and film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What was the title of your master\u2019s thesis or dissertation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> So fun story, I wanted to call it <em>Scatter<\/em>; or, <em>James Joyce Always Makes me Think of Boobs<\/em>, but my dissertation director said that by having \u201cboobs\u201d in the title, I could hurt my chances of getting a job. So we changed it to <em>Scatter<\/em>; or, <em>A Series of Minor Inconveniences<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> I have work forthcoming in <em>The Southern Poetry Anthology, Vol. IX: Virginia<\/em> published by the Texas Review Press, and my collection, <em>Fracture<\/em>; or, <em>James Joyce Always Makes me Think of Boobs<\/em> is under contract with Clare Songbirds Publishing House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"502\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Hylton-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Hylton-1.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/Hylton-1-300x235.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><em>In her spare time, Hylton is a roller derby fiend.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What and where was your previous position?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>I was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Arkansas Monticello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What is your favorite assignment to assign?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> What a groovy question. I know I\u2019m going to immediately think of something else, but the first thing that pops to mind is the personal narrative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What was the last book you read?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> I just reread <em>Straight Man<\/em> by Richard Russo because it always makes me laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q: What do you enjoy most about CCU so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong> How kind everyone is to each other.
