What was supposed to be a midpoint reprieve quickly\nturned into Spring Break: Doomsday Edition for all of us. Social distancing. Hourly\nsocial media check-ins. Stocking pantries with money we don\u2019t have. The list\ngoes on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\nmuch change in one week\u2019s time. It feels like days have been stretched into\nweeks and weeks stretched to months. Who\u2019s to say what our campus will look like\ncome this Friday? No doubt we\u2019re all anxious for this quarantine to be over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\nlife keeps going. No one is alone. We will all get through this one step at a\ntime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m\nin a fortunate situation where my academic world hasn\u2019t entirely been rocked. As\na graduate student in my last semester (!!), my capstone class only meets once per\nmonth, my independent thesis once per week. My classes have practically been\nremote since the start, but that doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m any less stressed. The momentum\nto keep going has slowed to a halt, as I\u2019m sure it has for you, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working\nremote is a different beast, one intent on distraction. Just when you thought\nyou\u2019ve knocked it down, it stands right back up. And I\u2019m guilty of not always\nbeing the most responsible when working remote, but I\u2019m getting better! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve\nfound that the hardest part to working at home is tricking my brain into differentiating\nwork time and leisure time. Remote work requires different skills and\ndiscipline for sure, but with practice and consistency, every student can get\nthrough the next few weeks successfully. These are just a handful of things\nI\u2019ve found that work for me: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Get\nout of your PJs. <\/li><li>Set\nweekly deadlines. <\/li><li>Create\ndaily task lists. <\/li><li>Review\nyour accomplishments before bed. Plan for the next day.<\/li><li>But\ndon\u2019t overload your daily schedule; adhere to a cutoff point. <\/li><li>Repeat\nto yourself: what can I conceivably accomplish today? And then execute.<\/li><li>Remind\nyourself of the schedule you adhered to in the classroom and apply it to your\nnew workspace. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of\ncourse, taking advice is much easier than acting. This is your time to find the\nprocess that works best for you. With discipline and determination, I know you\ncan do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\ncontradict myself, however, it\u2019s equally important to learn when to put away\nthe work. No doubt stress and anxiety are at an all-time high. If you\u2019re\nanything like me, you might be caught in an endless loop of scrolling through\nsocial media feeds. While it is important and responsible to stay connected, remember\nthe hobbies that fulfill you and lean into them. Turn on Netflix; I hear their\n\u201cParty\u201d feature allows movie nights while social distancing. Blast some music.\nLose yourself in a book. As for me, I\u2019ve been leaning heavily into gaming. I\u2019m staying\nconnected with my friends online, despite the lonely isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\nyou\u2019re stuck at home with looming responsibilities, the it\u2019s natural to look\ntoward your distractions. Through our second week of Spring Break I\u2019m doing the\nbest I can to strike that necessary balance between work and leisure. With\nconsistency, I\u2019m confident I\u2019ll make it through the other side, and I know you\nwill, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bad news keeps on coming, doesn\u2019t it?
