I’ve been quite productive when it comes to video games. Does that count?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Remote\nlife sure has its ups and downs. With the first week of classes officially in\nthe bag, it\u2019s a good time to reflect on what\u2019s worked and what hasn\u2019t. So far\nI\u2019ve rearranged my living room, planted white lilies in my garden, made\nconnections with my neighbors, explored deserted islands, and paid off two\ndebts to Tom Nook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh.\nYou thought I meant school productivity? As if.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m\ntalking about Animal Crossing: New Horizons. <\/em>It came out a week ago, at\nthe best and <\/em>the worst time. Since then, it\u2019s all I\u2019ve been thinking\nabout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\npretty much the same social simulation game on the Nintendo Switch that you\nmight have played on the GameCube or the 3DS. You start off in an uninhabited\nvillage with little more than a tent; construct tools to go fishing, chop down\ntrees, dig up fossils, or catch butterflies; befriend cute anthropomorphic\nanimals; and shape your island to your vision. And you still complete virtual\nchores in real time. Every day there\u2019s a new activity, but this time around\nthere\u2019s loads <\/em>of customization at your disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t\nworry: Tom Nook, that capitalist raccoon (!), is still there to put you in\ndebt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m\nhaving a blast with Animal Crossing<\/em> and so is my girlfriend. All my\nfriends are, too. It\u2019s been the primary talking point during our voice chats on\nDiscord. Have you found a gold nugget yet? How did you get those emotes? Did\nthe Wisp appear on your island? <\/em>We\u2019re discovering new things at different\npoints of our playing experiences and that connectivity, I think, is exactly\nthe kind of mental distraction we need right now. At least we have control over\nour peaceful game world through all this uncertainty! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animal\nCrossing <\/em>is charming, cute, relaxing, therapeutic, and the best\nmental distraction during quarantine. Every day since it\u2019s been out I\u2019ve looked\nforward to jumping back in, to report on my findings, and to listen in on my\nfriends\u2019 discoveries.
