{"id":752,"date":"2020-11-11T15:46:47","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T15:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/?p=752"},"modified":"2020-11-11T15:46:49","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T15:46:49","slug":"rethinking-the-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.ccu.press\/edwardslive\/rethinking-the-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Rethinking the book"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Emily Brooks, assistant professor of digital culture and\ndesign in the Department of English, shares her interests in multimodal\ncomposition, the digitization of books, and non-standard book objects. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Emily Brooks, \u201cbook\u201d has a wide definition. It\u2019s not\nlimited to the traditional bound paper item we all keep on our shelves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks\u2019 teaching focuses on \u201ccritical making,\u201d which includes\ntraditional print books, but also interactive fiction. Her students have\ncreated photo-poetry books; 3D-printed books; and choose-your-own-adventure\nnarratives using Twine, an open-source tool for telling non-linear stories. As a\n\u201cmakeademic,\u201d Brooks also makes and creates digitizations of non-standard book\nobjects, such as touch-and-feel books, movable books, and treasure bindings\n(books that include precious gemstones or ivory carvings). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her scholarly interests, Brooks said in a recent interview,\nare rooted in the early days of her undergraduate experience. Having started\ncollege as a pre-med student, Brooks then considered photography and graphic\ndesign before settling on English as her major discipline. Discovering that\nEnglish has a home outside of traditional media was a key moment in the\ncommencement of her academic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy first English course as an undergraduate was a very\nnon-traditional approach to studying English; it involved combining comics and\nscience studies with Romantic poetry and printmaking\u2026 it really got me started\nwith combining creative and making projects within more traditional literary\nstudies.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks\u2019 creative making involves books\u2019 content and makeup,\nbut also how a story\u2019s topic affects its interpretation \u2013 a concept she applies\nin the classroom as well.
