Eden Bauer \u201818, who\ngraduated with a B.S. in biology and minor in Spanish, stands before a\nclass of students in a small town in Spain. But she isn\u2019t teaching\nbiology; she\u2019s teaching English, to a group of about 100\nstudents, aged three to 13. Bauer\u2019s life-changing experience living and\nworking abroad for 18 months post graduation was possible thanks to her\ndecision to pursue a minor, her willingness to embrace adventure, and a\nserendipitous tip from a professor.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While most undergraduate students seek a career in their major field immediately post-graduation, Bauer took a different route. Because she was not quite ready to jump into science or continue to graduate school, Bauer opted to further explore her interest in foreign language and culture. At the recommendation of her mentor Barbara\u202fGasquet-Carerra, lecturer in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Bauer applied for and earned a position as an auxiliares de conversacion<\/em>, or conversational assistant, with the Spanish government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bauer moved to the\nprovince of M\u00e1laga, Spain, living and working in a \u201ctiny\npueblo\u201d with a population of about 1,800. At the CIEP Doctor Fleming school, Bauer served as a source of exposure to the\nEnglish language and could be asked to translate lessons on\nhistory, biology, and mathematics in real time on any given day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never had a specific\nclassroom to teach in; I was a teaching assistant,\u201d said Bauer. \u201cAs the\nteacher spoke, I repeated what they said in English.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position, offered\nthrough the North American Language and Culture Assistants Program (NALCAP), is\na part of a national initiative to ensure Spanish students do not fall behind\nin their education.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust as there\u2019s been a push\nfor American students to learn another language, there has also been a push for\nstudents in other countries to learn English,\u201d said Bauer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bauer initially did not\nclassify herself as the \u201cteacher type.\u201d However, she says, it can be an\nacquired skill, and she highly recommends this position to graduates interested\nin getting versatile teaching experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven if you don\u2019t think\nyou\u2019re the teacher type, you can figure out how to be,\u201d said\nBauer. [Teaching in Spain] has been such a beautiful and life-changing\nexperience.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bauer appreciates all the\nopportunities that were offered to her while at CCU and said her\nSpanish classes, mentors, and networks she fostered prepared\nher for the challenges of living abroad.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bauer credits Gary\nSchmidt, chair of the Department of Languages and Intercultural\nStudies and director of the Intercultural Language Resource Center (ILRC),\nwith demonstrating patience and providing her with\nthe encouragement to study language as a minor\ndiscipline. Bauer also recalls the encouragement and assistance\nof Yun Sil Jeon, Associate Professor of Spanish, when Bauer\nbegan thinking about teaching abroad.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bauer shared her experience\nin Spain with a CCU audience in \u201cCafecito Time,\u201d an online\npresentation recorded Friday, March 5.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Bauer is back in\nthe States, utilizing her biology degree to become a\nmidwife.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m really interested in\nholistic living and female empowerment,\u201d Bauer says.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To CCU students, Bauer recommends pursuing interests to\ntheir fullest extent, including asking questions of professors and\nclassmates; joining clubs; and taking advantage of resources such as the\nIntercultural Resource Center. Although her international experience\ndidn\u2019t immediately relate to her major field of study, she\u2019s certain the\nlessons learned will translate to future endeavors.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s something you want\nto do, do not allow fears or barriers to stop you,\u201d advises Bauer. \u201cIt\u2019s going\nto be scary, but you\u2019ll grow. That type of growth is something you can\u2019t get\nwithout certain experiences.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
