Born Again

Artist Statement

Together, the three works are called Born Again. The bodies of work functions as a series of self-portraits and reflections of the artist’s first few years of adulthood. During those six years the artist, Akirah Maloney has attended undergrad at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina and endured environmental and personal changes that left a trailing parade of tormented aggression from her newest worlds. The materials and objects used, hold nostalgic and evocative values which aids to the completeness of the object’s intentions. The chair in Chair Honey, is to represent the artist’s goal of going in a righteous path to success but instead was granted with hardship. The use of the swivel and deform clay body of Lil Ole Me is to follow the impression of remoteness stress. Lastly, Reduce & Produce is to illustrate self, producing a product of self to show the world her finesse. The intended imagery is conveying a narrative about a life changing experience that kicked off my outer body expedition to finishing.

Within the first few months of enrollment, I was bombarded with oppressive incursions and suffered from a life-altering fall that is assumed to impinged negatively on my future. Such events humiliated me and forced me to lose sight of myself. Through it all, I fought for comfort and rehabilitation while being oppressed with qualm, dejection, and misunderstanding. The found objects and the way they are manipulated shows state of hinderance and enlightenment. The works are contemporary. Born Again is my way of telling a story using a combination of found objects and materials.
