Endangered South Carolina Species and Their Effects on Humans

“I explore the negative physical effects on the human body caused by the subsequent rise of parasitic insects if these animals were to go extinct.”

Endangered South Carolina Species and Their Effects on Humans is a series of illustrations that show the symbiotic nature between endangered animals in South Carolina and the people that live there. I explore the negative physical effects on the human body caused by the subsequent rise of parasitic insects if these animals were to go extinct. These drawings are inspired by field journals and utilize text to annotate any comments, remarks or scientific facts. The depictions of the human body are what could theoretically happen if there were an increase in insects and a decrease in predators.

These illustrations are combined and bound to form an accordion style book that is both sculptural yet interactive for the viewer. This book promotes intimacy between the viewer and myself because they are encouraged to hold and manipulate the book any way they want. I depict amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects that are native to South Carolina; All illustrations in this book are realistically rendered to depict animals and humans. The human afflictions in this book are depicted with gore to contrast the aesthetically pleasing realism of the animals. By including scientific facts, the illustrations can be viewed with substance and integrity. These illustrations are designed to relate to South Carolinians and provide information of the impact these animals and their extinction will have on the ecosystem.
